Water in primary pool circuits is typically treated using sand filters. However, compared to modern membrane technologies, they are unable to ensure the required level of water quality, safety, and hygienic standards.
Every swimming pool discharges large volumes of pool wastewater at 26-33 °C into the sewer system - typically 30-65 litres per visitor per day. Part of this water is used for backwashing sand filters, while the rest is discharged as wastewater in line with mandatory water replacement requirements based on visitor numbers. This warm pool wastewater, still rich in thermal energy, is usually lost without recovery and must be replaced with fresh make-up water that has to be reheated to pool temperature.
